Governor signs executive order for workplace menopause resources

On June 1, 2026, Governor Bob Ferguson signed Executive Order 26-01 to establish workplace accommodations and resources for employees experiencing perimenopause and menopause, according to the Office of the Governor.

The directive requires the Washington State Women’s Commission (WSWC) to collaborate with cabinet agencies to implement workplace adjustments for personnel. According to the executive order, these measures include telework options, flexible dress codes, access to cold water, and temperature control.

The WSWC will also work alongside the Department of Health, the Health Care Authority, and the Bree Collaborative. According to the Office of the Governor, these entities will draft guidance and training resources regarding menopause and perimenopause accommodations for state agencies, public employers, and private employers.

Data from the Office of the Governor indicates that 38% of working women in Washington are between the ages of 40 and 59. National data from the Mayo Clinic estimates nationwide productivity losses related to menopausal symptoms at $1.8 billion. Figures from the Society for Women’s Health Research show 2 in 5 women considered leaving or left a job due to menopausal symptoms, and 1 in 4 did not pursue leadership opportunities for the same reason.

The Washington State Women’s Commission is directed to ensure agency management and employees receive training regarding workplace rights and responsibilities under the new order.
