The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has released updated timelines for several infrastructure projects in Whatcom County for 2026. These projects include bridge repairs, roundabout construction and pedestrian improvements.
WSDOT records indicate the following project statuses:
- Badger Road (SR546) and Benson Road Roundabout: This project is in pre-construction with a start date scheduled for Spring 2026. WSDOT data shows truck volume at this intersection increased 15% between 2021 and 2026. The compact roundabout is designed to reduce high-speed collisions. Construction is expected to include a 6-day full closure of the intersection.
- Mt Baker Highway (SR542) Glacier Creek Bridge: The project is in the pre-construction phase with a design and environmental documentation timeline extending through Spring 2027.
- Pole Road (SR544) Sidewalk Improvements: This project is currently in the bidding and implementation phase for 2026.
Everson and Nooksack Infrastructure
In Everson, the South Harkness Reconstruction project (Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) Project No. 6-W-838(009)-1) has moved past the bidding phase. The reconstruction includes site work and paving for roads, sidewalks, and parking areas. The scope also incorporates water and sewer infrastructure repairs. According to the City of Everson records, the project is designed to address drainage issues associated with Nooksack River overflow.
The city released the certified bid tab on March 2, 2026. The Everson City Council is expected to award the contract within 30 days. Reichhardt & Ebe Engineering managed the plan holder’s list for the project.
The Pole Road (SR544) South Everson Sidewalk Improvements project closed its bidding window on January 22, 2026, with a certified bid tab issued on February 12, 2026.
