Two new community buildings are in early planning stages

The Talbot family and the Whatcom Family YMCA recently announced a long-term partnership to pursue the development of a community YMCA in Barkley Village. As part of the partnership, the Talbot family has committed to donating land near the intersection of Sunset Drive, Woburn Street, and Hannegan Road for the proposed project.

The project is still in the very early planning stages, but the partnership and land commitment mark a step forward for a future community asset that could support healthy living, youth development, recreation, education, wellness, aquatics, gathering spaces and intergenerational connection in Whatcom County according to the announcement.

Heart of Play, a grassroots nonprofit organization currently planning a regional children’s museum and community hub, is actively scouting commercial real estate and property options between North Bellingham and Main Street in Ferndale according to their website.

The proposed facility will feature science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits for children up to age 12, alongside hands-on programming, student employment programs and countywide early learning resources.

To facilitate funding and structural planning, the organization is conducting two feasibility studies. The first, targeting potential donors, is supported by local consultants and sponsored by the Chuckanut Health Foundation. The second is a benchmarking feasibility study conducted in collaboration with the University of Washington’s Museology Department.

An opening date for the physical museum has not been finalized. In the interim, the organization plans to purchase a van that will become a mobile museum making appearances at community pop-up events.

An event cohosted by Heart of Play and the City of Ferndale Parks, Recreation & Trails Advisory Board is scheduled for Sunday, August 9, 2026, from 11am to 2pm at Pioneer Park in Ferndale.
